With its motto, “friends don’t let friends be bored. Hang out at Old Chicago for some really good food, a few beers and a great time,” owner Tom Connelly says the location near the Star Theatre complex has become a popular spot since it opened in October of 2008.

PlacesYouShouldKnow_Chucks_July09As the oldest remaining business in Hammond’s Hessville neighborhood, Chuck and Irene’s has plenty of history behind it.

But that history didn’t start in Hessville. Chuck and Irene’s was previously called Chuck and Al’s, which originally started operations out of East Chicago’s Harbor neighborhood in 1947. It wasn’t until 1959 that the bar relocated to 6110 Kennedy Ave. The East Chicago business was sold in 1960, and Chuck and Irene’s has been a staple of Hessville ever since.
