These days it’s pretty unique to find a band as talented as World Class Noise. Between the groups nine members, they have an almost a decades worth of experienceand it comes out through enceand it comes out through their music. Originally formed by lead vocalist Marc Pulido in 1993, World Class Noise has now been active in their current incarnation for over 15 years. When I asked Marc to explain how it all came together, here is what he had to say.
1. Q: Who is World Class Noise and what does everyone play? A: Lee Taylor / Percussionist, Paul Rau / Keyboards , Dan Kalnes / Bassist , Jake Ramseyer / Guitarist, Mark Heibert & Rob Collazo / Saxophonists , Nick Sednew / Trumpet, Christina Pawlowski / Vocalist & Flautist.
2. Q: How long have you been performing as World Class Noise? A: We have been saviors of soul for going on 16 yrs!
3. Q: Where does your name come from? A: My good friend Charlie Fersko and his good friend Steven Tyler from Aerosmith. They came up with the name at a New Years Eve party at Charlie’s house back in 1992 in Brooklyn, NY after a conversation I had with Steve and described to him the kind of band I was putting together. I had said that it would be multi-racial, bigender, and dress like the old soul vets, stylishly so. Charlie said “Sounds like the whole WORLD is joining that band.” Steven said, “You boys gonna make some NOISE” and I thought of the CLASS part on the way home.
4. Q: For all of those who may not necessarily know you that well, can you give us a bit of a time line on your band? Outside of yourself, who has been in it the longest? Who are some of the newest members? A: In the resurrection of WCN, the second half, Lee Taylor & Paul Rau have been in this current version for going on seven years. Nick Sednew (trumpet), by way of D.C, just joined last week in April 2009; Mark Heibert (sax), by way of Tennessee, started in the summer of 2008; Rob Collazo (sax) started in the summer of 2003; Dan Kalness (bass) started in the summer of 2008; Jake Ramseyer (guitar), by way of Michigan, started in the fall of 2008; and Christina Pawlowski (vocalist& flautist), by way of Minnesota, started in the spring of 2008.
5. Q: According to your bio, you (Marc) have been in a number of different bands. What was it that lead you to form World Class Noise? How is it different from your past musical projects? A: I have never been a band member in that I have always had my own band; don’t march to the beat of a different drummer, get your own. I was, and am sick, of pretenders; those who are doing this for a social life, sex, drugs, or whatever - synthesized horns, backing track, lip syncing f**k sticks that don’t have a clue. Look, what most people that are in or out of this business don’t get about me and how I do what I do is that it doesn’t matter if I am playing Madison Square Garden or my basement; it’s about the music. Nothing else matters except doing it as great as you can and everyone with an opinion, GOOD OR BAD, cannot matter in the end. We do what we do for ourselves and the collective mystic of our own soul. That’s what I want to contribute to the world, that’s what WE will contribute to the WORLD, with CLASS. We will contribute our own beautiful NOISE.
6. Q: Who are some of the artists you typically cover at your shows? A: There is not enough space to get this point across, though we are by definition a SOUL band. WE HAVE NO BOUNDRIES musically. You might catch us on a night where we work an Eryka Badu tune segued into a Pink Floyd number . We do love the pioneers of Soul, the Sam & Daves of the world, The Isleys, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Aretha of course, and we love playing STEELY DAN.
When all is said and done, World Class Noise is one of the few bands who truly enjoy the experience of the live show. If you’re interested in checking them out live, you can find their upcoming dates online at http://www.worldclassnoise. com or at http://www.myspace. com/wcnsoulband1. |
